In 2017, the installation rate of central control screens 10 inches or larger in new vehicles from domestic brands was only 27%, which rose to 63% by 2020. According to Omida, global shipments of automotive displays reached 127 million units in 2020 and are expected to rise to 148 million units in 2021, reaching 207 million units by 2025 and projected to reach 239 million units by 2030, doubling from 2020 levels in terms of shipment volume. With larger individual panel sizes, the anticipated value growth is expected to be substantial.
In addition, panel manufacturers can directly supply automotive system manufacturers in two ways. One method involves shipping Open Cells to module assembly manufacturers certified by automotive system manufacturers (LCMs). These module manufacturers assemble Open Cells into display modules, which are then delivered to automotive system manufacturers. The second method involves panel manufacturers assembling display modules themselves and shipping them directly to automotive system manufacturers (currently the predominant method).
In the field of automotive display panels, Continental companies wield significant influence. BOE Technology and other Continental companies, such as Tianma Microelectronics, have consistently increased their market share, establishing a solid foundation for localized supply chains in automotive displays. Japan Display Inc. (JDI) has historically been the largest provider of TFT-LCD automotive display panels. However, in recent years, mainland Chinese panel manufacturers have been rapidly increasing production capacity, maturing their technologies, and heavily investing in automotive displays. As a result, Tianma's market share in the automotive display sector grew from 12.4% in 2018 to 16.2% in 2020, securing its position as the global leader. Similarly, BOE Technology achieved a 10.5% market share in 2020, ranking fifth globally.
